Chapter Twelve
Friday afternoon, my heart stopped beating. Weâd all come to the mansion right after school, ready to make up for lost time. Weâd each grabbed three journals and went to our designated spaces. But after thirty minutes, I found it.
âAva? You alright?â
At Tobyâs question I jolted and looked up to see both boys watching me. Had I made a noise? âI found something.â
Instantly, they were on their feet and approaching the bed. âThe spell?â Tobias asked. âThe one to bring him back?â
I shook my head and looked down at the pages. âBut this was the last journal he wrote in.â
Tyson sat beside me and looked over my shoulder. âHow do you know this was the last journal?â
I flipped a few more pages and revealed the empty paper. They knew what that meant. Tristan filled up every journal; every notebook.
âThis is also the place where he wrote rough drafts of the spell we used.â My stomach churned as I flipped back to the page Iâd come from.
âCan I take a look?â Tobias asked. He didnât need to ask twice. I handed over the book and got up from the bed.
Tobias flipped through a few pages. âHe tried a lot of variations but I think I see what he was going for. Tristan was trying to use our family connection.â
âWhat do you mean?â Tyson asked. I walked further away and wrapped my arms around my stomach.
âMother had connections to a very powerful full-blood,â Tobias explained. âOur ancestor. Father always said that Mother was favored by that demon. Iâm not sure why. But Tristan tried to use that. He wanted to summon the full-blood in our own line. That connection would have made it easier.â
Easier? It hadnât been easy. It drained both of us and we didnât even get the demon we asked for. I leaned my forehead against the wall and focused on my breathing.
âListen to this,â Tobias said. âTristan used a bunch of keywords and moved them around to get the spell right. The blood of my line. The strongest of our past. Full-blood that lies in me. It all ties back to our ancestor. But spells require more than just words.â
âIntent,â I whispered. âAnd power.â The boys stayed quiet and I turned to look at them. âThatâs where things went wrong. We were thirteen, so we didnât have enough power. And we had intent but it wasnât specific enough. We didnât know what we were looking for.â
I was pretty sure the final spell said blood of my line. It should have worked.
âSomething went wrong and we got demon adjacent.â I sighed and rubbed a hand over my face. âWe should have thought it through.â
âThirteen-year-olds donât think things through,â Tobias sighed. âWhy did you want to summon a demon, anyway? We were always too scared to ask our parents about that.â
I smiled bitterly. âCuriosity. One time, I mentioned how the human portraits in this house were weird and we ended up talking about how we werenât sure what full-blooded demons looked like.
